A more equitable, inclusive and diverse sociaty

Hello Agents of Change,

This week has been a week of change with the arrival of Joe Biden as the new President of the United States of America and his Vice President Kamala Harris, who upon their arrival confirmed their commitment to work for a more equitable, inclusive and diverse society. We also have companies like Unilever and Alstom who are taking us on their journey as agents of change. You’ll notice that one of the first steps when entering into an inclusive process is to define what your objectives are so you know where to go. For Alstom, it is the inclusion of people with disabilities.

We see many brands taking the step and asking themselves questions about diversity and inclusion (D & I) by multiplying anti-racism trainings, against unconscious bias, etc. as if they were ticking boxes. An appropriate approach would be to analyze the quality of their corporate culture and to identify the deeper reasons behind their enthusiasm for diversity, fairness and inclusion for some.

As every week, you will find in the newsletter a series of articles and video to help expand your knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging. These resources may also help you to identify how to understand in order to act better. Diversity is a state indicating plurality while inclusion is an action, a choice to include people in a group that respects and values their differences. It allows them to express their true self, to realize their full potential (giving them what they need: Equity) and give the best of themselves for the realization of a common project in a psychological safe environment.

As Socrates said:

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.”

AI Biases

When we talk about AI, we must not forget the problem of biases and therefore the limitations these tools will generate. At the very least, we should ask ourselves whether the software to be utilised to support a strategy of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging has been built by a team from a diverse background.

“Look at who makes these tools — when they don’t have diverse [development] teams, I can almost guarantee you, there’s going to be bias in it,” Nayani said.

“Organisational strategy is all important. Rather than delivering some training, that will count as a tick box exercise in the long term, the real win is around developing diversity and inclusion through an equitably focused strategy that will support long term, organisationally ingrained inclusion.”
